Day 38 of the Offensive

Monday, 22 January 1945

Clear skies; sun shone over sparkling winter landscape; below freezing; Allied air operations resumed with planes active from early morning.

Day thirty-eight of the Ardennes campaign. The 5. Panzerarmee assumed command of all units on the former 6. SS-Panzerarmee front section at 12:00, formalising the German withdrawal. SS formations were specifically excluded from this command transfer, confirming their withdrawal from the front for transfer to the Eastern Front.

The 7th Armored Division launched attacks toward Hunningen and the In der Eidt woods. The 82nd Airborne Division began moving to relieve the 7th Armored Division. The 75th Infantry Division assembled and started movement toward the Seventh Army. Weather improved significantly with the end of the white-out period, and Allied air operations resumed.

The 7th Armored Division launched attacks toward Hunningen and the In der Eidt woods. General Rosebaum issued an attack order at 02:00 for a 10:00 assault. Task Force Wemple and Task Force Seitz were tasked with seizing Hunningen, while Task Force Rhea advanced south to secure the In der Eidt woods.
